Extraction & Concentration

“Gaia Herbs and Professional Solutions grow & produce the highest quality botanical medicines. After extraction & concentration, we analyze our products for therapeutic activity, microbial count, and heavy metals to insure that our final products meet or exceed the highest industry standards of strength, purity, and efficacy.”

Gaia Herbs and Professional Solutions Operate in GMP Compliant Production Facility
When a new extract batch is made to satisfy demand, we generate a new production batch record following FDA cGMP-compliant processes which assure that all equipment and utensils are cleaned and sterilized, all production work steps are performed according to standard operating procedures, and all product quality specifications are met.

Non-Toxic Ingestible Solvents Used in Preparation of Gaia Herbs' and Professional Solutions' Extracts
We use only ingestible, certifiably organic solvents in our extracts. Spring water and USP certified organic grain alcohol (or regular USP grain alcohol) are added to the plant matrix in the proper herb strength ratios to yield the most desirable bio-chemical constituents and to maximize yield. Grain alcohol, water, and super-critical carbon dioxide (CO2) are our only solvents for internally consumed products. Certified organic extra virgin olive oil is the solvent of choice for our herbal salve and oil products.

Whole Plant Standardization - An Innovative Technology Developed by Gaia Herbs and Professional Solutions
Our processes assure optimum batch-to-batch consistency and guarantee that everything Nature put into the herb is measurably present according to guaranteed minimum strength levels in the finished extract. Over ten years ago, Gaia Herbs and Professional Solutions pioneered the “whole plant standardization” process meaning that the full phyto-chemical spectrum that occurs naturally in the plant, and once extracted, is delivered in its natural proportions while also guaranteeing bio-active constituent concentration to stated levels. Our Whole Plant Standardization Process starts with harvesting crops at the optimal stage of activity, extracting utilizing whole plant extraction methods, concentration with low heat and vaccumm, and finally testing to known bio-active marker compounds. Because each plant has its own bio-chemical identity, plant specific extraction methods are used. Among our extraction methods that we use are flow thru extraction, heated and cold maceration, battery percolation, and super-critical CO2 extraction. Once extracted, the product is then filtered to remove particulate matter. Batch samples are then submitted to the analytical lab for activity and microbial analysis. If the product requires further concentration we then utilize low heat, low vacuum wiped thin film, and rotary evaporators to remove solvent and concentrate the extract without altering the proportion or ratios of constituents.

Gaia in Costa Rica

Gaia Herbs has successfully established a research farm in the Southern Nicoya peninsula of Costa Rica, to test the feasibility of growing Certified Organic crops. Currently under horticultrual reasearch is passionflower, holy basil, and echinacea. This venture, if successful, will provide us with a reliable source for "winter crops" grown in the tropics to Gaia Herbs' exacting horticultural standards.

Gaia & Organics

In June 2005, Gaia Herbs received its 9th annual Organic Grower certificate from Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO). OTCO is known as one of the most strict certifying bodies in the U.S. even prior to passage of the National Organic Program (NOP) in 2002. Gaia's 250-acre organic medicinal herb farm, located at the company's headquarters in Brevard, NC, has been continuously certified by OTCO since 1997. Gaia also received its 4th annual Organic Processor certificate from OTCO.
